Minutes

  1. Meeting was called to order at 9:03 a.m.

  2. Brunetta reported to the group that there was not a staff member available to take minutes at the April meeting and this gap was not identified until after the meeting.  Members were asked to forward any critical items for inclusion in the meeting summary for this month’s minutes to her.  The CARE presentation from last month will be included at the conclusion of the May minutes.  E. Taylor moved to approve and J. Barnes seconded.

  3. Incident Review

    1. Tiffany Perry shared a summary of the 8 injuries - 1 repetitive, 1 crushed finger, 3 strains, 1 cart accident with no injury, 1 eye injury, 1 fall.  None of the reports warranted investigation.

    2. Missy Brunetta shared two personal injury reports from April; one was a trip and fall in the Student Center, treated with first aid on site; second was a student who was kicked in the head during a dance performance, was treated with first aid on site then sought follow up care the following day, was diagnosed with a concussion; no known claims for either.  J. Barnes also reported a student injury - a cut suffered from broken glass in a laboratory, was referred to the SHC for treatment.

  4. Safety in focus

    1. Heat Illness Prevention and Awareness (May 2023)

    2. CARE Team (April 2023)

  5. Standing Reports

    1. University Police - M. Nunes reported one safety issue, a trip and fall injury that required transport for medical care.

    2. Brunetta and Csontos reported updates on the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) programs.

      1. Csontos has completed preparation of ladder safety training.

      2. Additional plan reviews under way.

      3. Brunetta reminds all members to report any known campus procedures that deviate from OSHA requirements.  EHS intends to align with OSHA, not create stricter requirements, unless mitigating factors warrant.

      4. J. Lundberg asked M. Brunetta about a recent campus communication that announced that she would be assuming the role of EHS Director full time.  She confirmed this change.  J. Barnes asked if another EOC Director would be appointed since the announcement stated that Brunetta vacated that role.  T. Hill clarified that M. Brunetta would remain in the EOC Director role when the EOC is activated (along with himself and Michael Ogg) and that K. Newman would be assuming Brunetta’s emergency planning, response, and mitigation duties.  Congratulations were offered to Newman.

    3. Dana Twedell reviewed current safety-related projects.

      1. Map of pathway and roadway improvements to be done over Summer 2023; including main pathway from flagpole to Student Center, Redwood Drive near Verdot Village, main quad pathways, and others.

      2. Confirmed that there will be a planned power outage the week of May 22 from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM.  Feeder 2 has already been replaced and this work will replace feeder 1, leaving the campus electrical infrastructure significantly improved.  Departments with any concerns should contact D. Twedell.

    4. Brunetta and Newman provided an update on Emergency Services activities.

      1. Brunetta and Newman attended the California Emergency Services Associated conference this week.

      2. The Great Shakeout Earthquake Drill was held in April with a test of the emergency notification system and a test of the two way communication function as well as electronic board notification.  All went very well and the notifications were delivered in a very timely manner.

    5. Ryan Jasen Henne reported that much of Student Affairs efforts are concentrated on graduation planning and residential move out.

    6. Michael Eynon from Disability Services for Students shared that the 2023 Disabled Students Graduation celebration was held with about 60 students, one of the largest groups ever.  He also shared that they have had some climate control issues in the testing center, which need to be resolved prior to finals week so  that the space is suitable for students to take finals.  Kelley Green assured him to report any issues  and they would address them right away.

    7. Steven Green thanked M. Brunetta for her assistance in resolving an issue with campus staff being assigned to an alternate worksite with safety issues.  M. Brunetta reiterated that all employees should receive safety information any time their worksite environment is changed and EHS and Risk are here to provide support and information.

    8. Due to organizational changes in Risk Management, Safe SSU will remain as a website and resource but will be limited in the ability to launch and support new programming.  As such, SafeSSU will be removed from the committee agenda.  Members are encouraged to report new safety initiatives or partners to Risk so that site updates can be made as needed.

    9. No HR/Labor representative present (attended but had to leave early).

    10. No updates from Teamsters Union.

    11. No APC rep present.

    12. No CFA rep present.

    13. No AS rep present.

  6. New Business

    1. No new business reported.

    2. Request from J. Barnes to have an after action discussion of the May planned power outage at the next meeting.
