Campus-wide Safety Committee Minutes October 8, 2020

  1. Introductions

    1. No new members or guests present.

  1. Review of minutes from previous month were approved as written. 

  1. Accident & Near Miss Review (Workers’ Compensation)

    1. 3 injuries reported in September, two knee injuries (on-campus) and one finger strain (off-campus). 

    2. Slips, trips, falls continue through winter and will be on the rise. 

  1. Standing reports:

    1. University Police

      1. Representative Karl Mortenson reported a busy month for UPD in September. Eight arrests in September including a warrant arrest, stolen vehicle, drug paraphernalia, vehicle pursuit and suspicion of driving under the influence, violation of probation, and minor in possession and of drug paraphernalia. 

    2. EH&S

      1. Inspection of chemical areas has begun and stared with the Art department.

      2. EHS new website is with Web Team for review. It will launch soon hopefully. 

      3. SSU has a new drinking water permit.

      4. We are currently in wildfire season and as a reminder to review the wildfire smoke guidelines.

      5. Hazardous material reduction all over campus occurring. 

    3. Student Affairs

      1. No updates for DSS.

      2. Preparatory planning occurring around the Election regarding Time, Place, Manner policy. 

    4. Facilities Management

      1. No updates for FM. 

      2. Teamsters Representative Jordan Lundberg asked about Respirator Training. EHS advised that training had been assigned via CSU Learn and working on fit test scheduling.

  1. Emergency Services

    1. Glass Fire

      1. Glass Fire is at 66% containment and over 67,000 acres burned as of today.

      2. There has been great strides made in firefighting efforts this week. 

      3. Currently we have 6 student and 5 staff with either lost or damaged homes. Human Resources, Faculty Affairs, Student Affairs and Academic Affairs are working with those students and staff to support and coordinate with those individuals. 

    2. Red Flag Warnings

      1. Several Red Flag Warnings from the National Weather Service over the course of the month. 

      2. Majorly effects campus by limiting on-campus mowing activities and other activities that may increase wildfire potential. 

      3. Working on tilling the vacant land SSU owns off Petaluma Hill Road to help with defensible spaces. 

    3. Shelters

      1. SSU was mission-tasked for several shelters on campus during the Glass Fire. One was a Temporary Evacuation Point and Congregate Shelter. Valley of the Moon foster youth and social workers are currently still in our shelter due to structural damage. 

    4. COVID-19 (Coronavirus)

      1. Current case count in Sonoma County stands at 8,083 total cases. Sonoma County still stands in the widespread tier in the Governor’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy.

      2. Metrics are still not in range to move tiers. 

      3. COVID monitoring with students and staff include:

        1. 3 positive on-campus students

        2. 9 positive off-campus students

        3. 1 positive on-campus staff

        4. 5 off-campus staff

        5. 8 individuals considered Persons Under Investigations (PUI)

      4. Compliance checks are continuing. Managers are responsible for their staff complying to all COVID safety protocols. COVID Monitoring team continues to revise protocols to protect our community. 

    5. Fire on Campus

      1. Sunday, October 4 in the morning a low-level fire broke out on campus on the ridge between City of Rohnert Park and SSU boundary lines. Extinguished quickly by the fire department. We will be working with City of Rohnert Park to clean up this area. 

  1. New Business / Roundtable Discussion

    1. Tree Project

      1. East Cotati and Petaluma Hill Road tree removal project is paused due to some equipment issues. It will restart soon and continue on a revised schedule.
