  1. Chemical Hygiene Plan

    1. EHS will be responsible for the CHP once it is re-written.

    2. Think about any changes you would like to see as chemical end-users.  I want to incorporate what will work for SSU not just comply with the regulation.

  2. Chemical and waste labeling

    1. Need for all hazardous waste to have the hazwaste sticker on it.  This was a recurring finding in the CSU audit and an easy one to fix.

    2. Chemical labels need to follow the GHS standard, as Chris mentioned he has made quite a few templates as well as desk instruction on how to create your own label.  All chemicals must meet the GHS standard.

    3. Proposed Chemical storage (near hazwaste area and Darwin).  We will need academic support to help get the University to fund this.  Overall, this is the best option for safely storing waste without transporting it across campus.

  3. Laboratory Inspections

    1. Ensure the updated inspection checklist is utilized (question 46) and asks to inspect the certification of fume hoods and BSC.

    2. Record retention extremely important, so please keep your inspection records.

    3. Safety Information Card – Implementation progress, the departments have done a wonderful job in getting this implemented.

  4. Chemical Inventories

    1. Need to have an updated inventory for chemicals in laboratories.  Also a recurring finding in the audit.  Also required by law.

      1. Needed for stock and for hazwaste disposal

  5. Student training and documentation

    1. Please ensure it is happening.  Very important.  This was probably the most attention paid to any one item in the audit.

  6. Audit

    1. We have not received the final report, but most findings involve some part of chemical use, inventory, labeling, eyewash and safety showers and fire extinguishers.  Student training was the most asked question.
